Description
SUIS, the borderland between Holland and Belgium.
The Belfry
The wealth and power of Sluis, now and in the past, is reflected by the Belfry. (Belfort: a medieval tower built on or near a hall or
covered market, where the city bells hung. A Belfort was the symbol of civic pride and municipal autonomy).
This prestigious building in the Netherlands is one of a kind. The town hall was built in 1375 to a Flemish example. The bell tower where
the privileges preserved, was the symbol of the maintenance of peace city. From here, the guards kept the enemy in the eye. In 1393 the
town hall was destroyed by fire. The year 1396 above the tympanum (= tympanum above the entrance) at the front, the date of the
reconstruction of the town hall. The artist Jacob van Huse made in 1424 in a bell man "Johnny van Sluis". This picture was in the tower
and strikes every half hour with a hammer on the clocks. Many Sluizenaar knows his way to the legend of Johnny van Sluis after telling
During the Second World War (11 October 1944) was the town hall was destroyed and with practically razed. After it is in its original
condition and built in 1960 back into use. The chamber is still in use for the council, wedding ceremonies and as a reception area. The
beautiful interior of the chamber is well worth a visit. The first object that immediately catches the eye, is the wrought iron gate from the
18th century. Originally used this gate before the bar (= formerly by four claws / banks enclosed space within which a lawsuit was held)
of the town hall in Middelburg . It was then transferred to the Court (The Provincial Court) in Middelburg. Other treasures include a
tapestry from the 17th century in the region of Oudenaarde (Belgium). On either side of the fireplace there are two fragments of tomb
paintings, frescoes, excavated in 1949 from the burned St. John's Church. The arms decorations on the bars of persons who have been of
historical significance for the city of Sluis. We think of the Counts of Flanders, the dukes of Burgundy and of course not forgetting Prince
Maurice, who Sluis freed from the Spanish yoke in 1604. Sluis has received city rights in 1290 by the Count of Flanders (Guy of
Dampierre) and belonged to the county of Flanders. By the marriage of Philip of Burgundy (Philip the Bold) with Magareta from Male
(heiress of Flanders) came Sluis automatically under the authority of Burgundy. Splendid and important events took place in Sluis off. As
the marriage of Philip the Good to Isabella of Portugal (1430) that here with great pomp was celebrated. The engagement of Charles the
Bold with Margaret of York (1468) took place in Sluis. Info from: sluisonline.nl. Photo by PainterArtistFIn at wholisticartsschool.com
